Bryan Johnson on Sleep

In this post, I’ve already discussed how important I consider sleep for health. Sleep is one of the most crucial pillars of well-being, and I’m always fascinated when someone offers a fresh perspective on improving it.

Recently, I came across a great conversation on Ranveer Alahbadia’s BeerBiceps Podcast (The Ranveer Show), where Bryan Johnson shared some simple yet effective tips for improving sleep.

Beyond sleep, Bryan Johnson discusses a wide range of topics in the podcast, from longevity to optimizing health. I have a fundamental disagreement with his approach to diet—Bryan is a vegan, while I am a strong advocate for the carnivore diet. That said, I’m an open-minded person, and I don’t believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Here’s a quick breakdown of Bryan’s advice:

  1. Reframe Your Identity: Treat yourself as a “professional sleeper.” Just like you’d take any other profession seriously, prioritize sleep with a similar mindset.

  2. Eat Earlier: Make sure to have your last meal at least two hours before bedtime. Ideally, push it even further to three, four, or even six hours. Eating earlier and lighter meals can significantly enhance your sleep quality.

  3. Control Your Light Environment: In the evenings, reduce your exposure to screens and blue light. Opt for yellowish or even red lighting to promote a more restful environment.

  4. Be Consistent: Choose a bedtime and stick to it, ensuring you’re in bed within a 30-minute window. Consistency is key to building a strong sleep routine.

  5. Establish a Night Routine: One hour before bed, switch into “sleep mode.” Calm your mind and body through activities like walking, breathwork, meditation, or reading. When thoughts or ideas pop up, acknowledge them, but remind yourself they can be dealt with tomorrow. This routine helps prevent nighttime rumination, which can keep you awake.

As someone deeply invested in health and performance, I found some of these tips refreshing (others I had already figured out on my own), and I hope you will too. Sleep well, and perform even better!
